STARRC lab participates in 2nd annual BioBonanza science outreach event

Members of the STARRC lab joined researchers in the biological sciences to participate in the 2nd annual UK BioBonanza. As part of this outreach education event, members of the STARRC team provided information and hands on activities about the science of disgust to children and families in the Lexington community. BioBonanza had over 220 participants this year!

STARRC Lab to Present Research at International Trauma Conference
August 31, 2017

In November, members of the STARRC lab will be presenting their work at the Annual Meeting of the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies in Chicago

  • Using trauma imagery to examine whether emotion regulation and impulsivity moderate the association between PTSD and urges to drink among individual with co-occurring PTSD and alcohol use disorder.
  • Posttraumatic stress disorder and co-occurring drug abuse: Targeting shared maintenance factors via brief interventions
  • Self-disgust as a potential mechanism in the association between posttraumatic stress symptoms and risky sexual behavior.
  • Typ of victimization predicts poorer academic performance among college students.
  • Parental avoidance coping assistance prospectively predicts child avoidance coping following pediatric injury.
Dr. Badour Receives Research Grand to Support Study of Integrated Treatment for PTSD/and Substance Use Disorders

Dr. Badour received an Igniting Research Collaborations grand from UK to work in collaboration with Dr. Craig Rush in the College of Medicine to conduct a pilot study investigating the effectiveness of a variable-length cognitive-behavioral treatment for PTSD and co-occurring substance use disorder.

Dr. Badour Joins Research Team to Investigate an Online Cognitive-Behavioral Treatment for Insomnia Among Rural Appalachian Women

Dr. Badour is excited to begin working with Drs. Mairead Moloney (Socialogoy) and Daniela Moga (Pharmacy Practice and Science) as port of an Igniting Research Collaborations grant from UK to pilot the effectiveness of a 6-session online cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) program among rural Appalachian women aged 45+.

Caitlyn Hood Selected for Mentored Research Fellowship

Congratulations to 2nd year doctoral student Caitlyn Hood for being selected for the UK Center for Clinical and Translational Science Professional Student Mentored Research Fellowship (PSMRF). This 12-18 month fellowship will provide Caitlyn with a stipend to participate in clinical and translational research within the STARRC lab.

STARRC Welcomes Two Summer Research Fellows

We are lucky to have two summer fellows joining our team: Harry Hazelwood and Stephanie Lim:

Harry is a rising senior at Transylvania University who participated in the UK Summer Training in Alcohol Research (UK STAR), a competitive NIH-funded fellowship that supports undergraduate students to complete a 10-week intensive research internship in a lab conducting research focused on alcohol and it's effects.

Stephanie recently completed a master's degree in psychology at California State University, Sacramento. She comes to us by way of the California Pre-Doctoral Program as a Sally Casanova Scholar. This is a prestigious award designed to increase diversity in graduate education, supported Stephanie to complete a 10-week research fellowship at any degree-granting institution of her choice in the US. We are excited that Stephanie decided to join us at UK for this experience!

Dr. Badour selected for BIRCWH Scholar's Program

Dr. Badour was recently selected to participate in UK's Building Interdisciplinary Research Careers in Women's Health (BIRCWH) K12 program. The BIRCWH is a career development program funded by the National Institutes of Health to support junior investigators by providing training and protected time for research to advance research in the areas of women's health and sex differences. As part of the BIRCWH program, the STARRC team will be conducting a study to examine sex differences in the relationship between posttraumatic stress symptoms and non-medical prescription opioid use.

Ashley McGar receives summer undergraduate research assistantship

Congratulations to Ashley McGar who was awarded a Summer Undergraduate Research Assistantship through the Department of Psychology to work on developing an independent research project to study body shame and self-disgust among college women exposed to interpersonal violence.
